Brasero is pre-installed in Ubuntu and you can burn CD/DVD through it easily. Which version of Ubuntu are you using?
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    Its Ubuntu/8.04 (hardy)

Is there any other way to check whether its working or not rather than keep on trying?

does the cd spin at all or do the lights on the front come on? Try doing this in terminal

    sudo apt-get install k3b

then try k3b instead of brasero

K3B is KDE based and you have to install a lot of KDE libs for that. Its doesn't work properly sometimes.

Brasero works perfectly and I have burned a lot of CD/DVDs using it.
Doesn't a dialog box having Brasero option appear on inserting Blank CD/DVD?

I actually have had problems with Brasero before....that's why I suggested k3b but it's true that you'd have to install about 30 megs of KDE libs

I second Jmadero. Plus, this way, if for some odd reason a dependency was missed that's preventing a proper burn, this should catch and install it.
