    Grub Geom Error

    Hi all,

I installed Ubuntu 8.10 on an external hard drive some time ago and was unable to boot into Windows XP without connecting the external harddrive. It keeps on having Grub error 21 if trying to boot without external hard drive. Today, I tried to fix it by following instructions in linuxquestions.org and reboot. Then i had this Grub Geom Error and couldn't log into Windows XP after choosing it from the menu. Please help. Thanks!!

You have installed GRUB in MBR of Internal disk but its config files are in External disk. Thats why Windows XP doesn't boot up with External disk.

First of all, boot up from Windows Installation CD, select Repair and execute fixmbr. It will remove GRUB from Internal disk and Windows OS will boot up by default on reboot.

You have to edit a lot of files to fix External disk problem. I would suggest you to re-install Linux. Make sure to disable Internal Disk in BIOS during Installation. Installer will install GRUB in MBR of External disk and Internal disk will be intact.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
