Have you checked if this is available in one of the repositories ... installing with the package manager (apt-get - GUI front end Synaptic package manager) is usually the best way to go.

It doesn't appear to be available in the repos and I couldn't find an Ubuntu package for it.

What happened when you typed ./configure? Was there output?

Take a look here ... not sure if its in a 3rd party repo ... but if it is it's better to add the repo and install through synaptic than compile from source.
