maybe try replacing ALSA with OSS:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenSoundBodhi 1.3 & Bodhi 1.4 using E17
Dell Studio 17, Intel Graphics card, 4 gigs of RAM, E17

Check this page on settng up modprobe for sb16: Matrix:Module-sb16 - AlsaProject
If it doesn't help after a reboot, type in lsmod | grep snd to see what if any sound modules are loading.
Edit: or go along with jMadero's suggestion. OSS doesn't have some of the features of ALSA, but those extras often don't work right on ISA cards anyway. OSS should at least make the card produce some sort of noise!
