Help I can't get Ubuntu to load
I have downloaded the newest version of Ubuntu and tried to load the live CD. It will load as far as it gets to the progress bar and about 20 seconds after that bar appears and starts loading the machine stops. The CD-Rom stops loading and it hangs like that til I turn the power off.
I have a HP Pavillion a622n.
I did upgrade the graphics card from the onboard graphics intel whatever to an ATI card.
Has anyone encountered this before or no why it won't load the live CD?
Thank You for your help.
I tried Linux about 8 years ago. I had Red Hat 2.0 I think it was not sure but I was using a dual boot off two HD and it work fine until windows decided that it did not like Linux. I really want to get rid of XP and have Linux on my machine because I have a newer laptop that I can use if I need windows. Thank You.

Welcome to the forums windowsblows
Give the alternate CD a try ... it usually works if the live CD fails

Also, I am looking to run just the live CD version until I see this thing is going to work. I have a scrap 320 GB HD that I took off a (new laptop 1 yr that broke on me.) I plan on installing Linux on this machine once I see that it works and I put the HD in a USB case so this should work. I can usually diagnose these thing but then again I kinda gave up working on computers about 8 years ago. I have been using windows unfourtuneately ever since and would really like to ditch the XP.
I just hope that Linux is a little bit more friendly then in the past as my wife (not good with the computer) deleted the recycle bin in windows. I have never seen anybody do that
I could not believe it I just told whatever you don't need it anyway.

There used to be a link from the Ubuntu download page ... you should be able to get it here
Ed: ... if you want to get the live CD to load try a few of the boot options - I think pressing F1 at the boot menu lists them (the last version of Ubuntu I used was 8.10).

When you do the install make sure you either have the internal drive disconnected/disabled in BIOS or make sure you don't install the bootloader Grub to the MBR of the internal hard drive.
... I guess you know BIOS on the machine needs to support boot from USB or you will struggle to boot Linux (unless you use the SuperGrub CD).

Well actually I was going to load LILO into the MBR thought that was what you were supposed to do and thank you for the supergrub CD sight I will need it because just by guessing I could figure that boot from usb may not be possible but you never no.
Thanx again.

if ya wanna just run it live. hook up your moniter to onboard graphics and it;ll boot up all the way. Your ATI card is what is killing live boot.

I use Grub, and this is the default bootloader for most distros (some use LILO & you can use LILO if you want).
If you put grub on the MBR of the internal hard drive pointing to config files on the external hard drive then once you remove the external hard drive the system will no longer boot ... I assume a similar thing will happen with LILO but have not checked.
You can use Supergrub to fix the problem - reinstall grub, write Windows bootloader code to the MBR and boot an OS directly ...

Remember to enable onboard graphix in bios first.
