Maybe the problem is with the CD writer ... Are you able to boot the laptop with Puppy CD? maybe unetbootin could help ......

    Yep, Puppy ran from a burned disk first and then I put it on a 4 gig usb thumb drive and formated the thumb drive to "ext3" I believe it was, but the darn puter still won't save a "session file" . When it logs off it gives a "kernal panic" error no matter what choice I have made about saving the file or not saving the file.......
    It runs from an old Ubuntu live cd we have too. I don't know if that old one has an install option, and you just inspired me to look.... so .... off we go again
