[SOLVED] Ubuntu install problems
I have tried to install Ubuntu 7, 8 and 9 with no luck. Each version reports an I/O error at different percentages of install (7 - 39%, 8=49%, 9=31%). I have tried making different partitions on the HD in different areas, have reformatted the hard drive to lock out any potentially bad sectors, and Windows installs and runs just fine on the PC.
I can boot from the CD and run Ubuntu from the CD, just can't get it to install. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you do the CD test to see of there is defect? If my memory is good, you will have the option at the CD boot menu "Check CD for defect".

Yes, we even made a copy of the CD and had the same problem. The fact that 3 different versions of Ubuntu gave us the same error (although at different install percentages) make me think there is a conflict with one of the devices in the computer, although Ubuntu doesn't tell us which. I have no experience with Linux, so I'm looking for all the help I can get... thanks!

Post your machine's specs here. Which Graphics Card do you have?
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

When you boot with the live image (on the CD), grab and send in the forum the output of those 2 commands :
- dmesg
- lspci -vvv

Try pressing F6 twice and check both ''noapic''' and ''nolapic'.

My sincere thanks to all of you who attempted to help. I checked the integrity of the CD and found the error... it was in the file download from ubuntu.com. I dl'ed a new copy from bittorrent and it installed fine.
Anyone who has I/O errors on install should definitely use the "check CD integrity" option on the main install menu FIRST!
Thanks again.
