Hello i installed linux ubuntu to my computer and now when it starts it goes to the part where there are the drum sound and it asks for username and password and after i give them it just loads an empty desktop i mean there is nothing in the desktop exept that brown background color and the mouse pointer that i can move but i cant do anything no buttons no icons not anything. What might cause this? Thanks!

I ran into this exact same thing when moving from 8.04 to 8.10. Are you using 8.10? Could be your graphics are not able to handle compiz-fusion which is enabled by default in 8.10. Compiz-fusion was disabled by default in 8.04. If you suspect this is the case, after boot up, press ALT+F3 to get a terminal. Then do this command:
It will ask for you password. Enter it and press enter. After compiz is removed then relog. This fixed it for me and gave me a desktop so I could then sort my graphics problems and then move on to re-installing compiz-fusion. Hope this helps...Code:sudo apt-get remove compiz compiz-core

Thanks for the post. I tried that and now it's working. I havent been using linux before but decided to try that. If some of you know any basic programming languages for linux maybe you could give me a link. Also is there any similar language in linux like batch language in windows and where can i find the tutorial? Thanks very much!
