I ran into this exact same thing when moving from 8.04 to 8.10. Are you using 8.10? Could be your graphics are not able to handle compiz-fusion which is enabled by default in 8.10. Compiz-fusion was disabled by default in 8.04. If you suspect this is the case, after boot up, press ALT+F3 to get a terminal. Then do this command:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get remove compiz compiz-core
It will ask for you password. Enter it and press enter. After compiz is removed then relog. This fixed it for me and gave me a desktop so I could then sort my graphics problems and then move on to re-installing compiz-fusion. Hope this helps...

Also is there any similar language in linux like batch language in windows and where can i find the tutorial? Thanks very much!
