Is there any other instance of Package Manager or Auto-Updater running?
Close all other instances because its not possible to run more than one instance of Package Manager.

I guess I will never know just what happened. Later the update manager worked just fine.

This is just a guess, but periodically Ubuntu will check for updates (how often depends on your configuration) and if the auto-checker was running at the same time you were trying to run your update, it locked. I've run into this at random intervals when trying to install DEBs manually. Again, just a guess.

It was definitely because of Auto Updater only. I have disabled it permanently though.
