    no sound, internet only. ubuntu 8.10

    I can get sounds playing my Cd's , Logging in, error on my computer ect. But on the internet nothing, U tube, Any demo.video, I checked on the porn sites, Nothing at all . Some computer tech. stumped ! I am not computer savvy at all. I've been doing a lot research on my 8.10 and just going in circles. How about maybe an update on my Micro media flash player 9 plugins ? My systems running with Firefox web browser, Ubufox extension for firefox, and Macomedia flash player 9 plugin . It also says that cononical provides updates for web browser and for ubufox ext. only. Micromed . Updates may be provided by Ubuntu community. Can you please help me with problem. Thank you for your time Rick

    Can you hear sound with non-flash streams? Have you ever been able to hear sound from flash streams? Make sure you don't have any conflicting packages installed as well - see my howto here for details, as part 1 could help.

    This is my first computer ive ever owned. So im not to sure what your telling me. Ive been haking away, doing research , from sounds , preferances, help, Ubuntu documentations. How to's , I know I have a Micromeadia flash player 9 plugin , Firefox web browser, and ubufox extention for firefox. If that helps. Im typing right now to you while on the Internet and Im listening to music on my rythembox. It sound strong and clear but go to a site that has video I see the picture but no sounds at all. no hissing, no noises at all. Now everything was working fine. and gone the next. I went to the terminal to check about the conflicting packages you mentioned. I closed it up ,If I key in a wrong comand or letter , Then ill really mess it up not knowing what im doing . Just a little over my head, by a mile. Ha Ha. And thats the only way is thru the terminal to check or make adjustments right ? If I have to I have to, what do you think ? You dont live in Albuquerque N.M. do you Ha Ha

    It's not necessarily the only way, but it's often the most direct and it's far easer to post a couple lines to plop in a terminal than try and guide someone through a bunch of graphical menus.

    This is a fairly common bug with Ubuntu 8.10. I found a couple of possible fixes.

    First open a terminal (I believe it's under the applications menu), and type
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound
    Restart firefox and see if that helps.

    If not, try
    Code:
    sudo killall pulseaudio
    sudo alsa force-reload
    Then go to System>Preferences>Sound and set everything to ALSA.

    If neither of those work, here's another more complicated guide.

    For Ubuntu, it should be your user password. But you said someone else installed it? It's possible it was configured to deny your user admin priveleges. But it's not a problem. You have a couple of options. You can download the newly released Ubuntu 9.04, backup your harddrive, and install that, in which case you will fix your password problem, have a nice new upgraded Ubuntu, and who knows, your sound problem might be fixed in this release as well. Or you can set a root password.
