    Ubuntu 9.04

I have already got installed on my laptop Ubuntu 8.10 but this is running from within Windows XP.

I want to upgrade to 9.04. I have read the normal upgrade instructions but will that work in my setup, (as my installation of 8.10 is from within Windows)?

You mean that you used WUBI to install Ubuntu?
Upgrade should work, but you should make a backup of any important data you have, in case something goes wrong (power failure, etc...)

In System->Administration->Synaptic or Software Sources, set "Release Upgrade" to "Normal Releases" and run the Update manager. You should then be presented with an Upgrade to 9.04 option.

If 8.10 is working fine then I won't suggest you to upgrade to 9.04. There is nothing special in this release.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    Ubuntu 9.04

    Yes I used Wubi.

Thank you both for the advice.

Apparently my wifi card 'Broadcom' is not supported by Linux has this been fixed in th new version?

Running another OS in this way (through another OS) is this what is meant by a virtual machine?

Try LiveCD of new version instead of installing it. Check if your card works or not.
