Doesn't apt-get remove kubuntu-desktop-kde3 remove all the packages? Which version of Ubuntu are you using?
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

apt-get has been upgraded in latest distros and it removes all packages along with meta-packages.
In your machine, apt-get is removing meta-package only. Which version of Kubuntu are you using? It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
