This may sound a little funny, but have you tried adjusting the sound mixer from the volume icon? Some defaults don't suit all cards so your main channel may be muted.

    terminal:

    sudo apt-get install alsamixergui

go to application-> sound & video -> alsamixergui

    make sure everything is up

    terminal:

    sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.config

    append this to the end:

    options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=3stack
    Bodhi 1.3 & Bodhi 1.4 using E17
Dell Studio 17, Intel Graphics card, 4 gigs of RAM, E17

I'm honestly not finding anything that would suggest this card wouldn't work out of the box....are you positive that the three main volume bars are up (PCM, Master and Front)?

Also when you did the add on to the alsa config on the bottom did you restart before trying again?

    no nsound

    thanks for the reply

I did reboot and try again but nothing. Prior to the last change I had pulse audio active and when i checked the volume playback meter it showed a signal on the meter if i tried to played a test sound. nothing from speakers though. all channel are on and set about 64-65 using alsamixer.
