graphics card issue; fans not working, either :o

I recently updated to Jaunty, and since I'm having problems with my graphics card working properly. I can't get DVDs to play, video playback online, and even Compiz/getting "extra" or "normal" graphics settings. There's an error for the latter after several seconds of flashing.

I also cannot get the fan to switch on. It reads the temperature, but I've never once heard the fan go on. I don't actually do a whole lot with the laptop; I type notes in class on it and watch movies on it when I am on the train, so it doesn't really get hot right away but it's pretty unbearable during three hour courses and ultimately becomes unbearable. It's never shut off, though.

I have a Compaq Presario C700 and GM965/GL960 graphics card.

Is there anything I can do about either issue or is there anymore information I need to provide?
