    Unhappy Evolution SMTP settings

Our email host provider changed ports for outgoing mail and now my Evolution settings don't work. I have outgoing mail sitting in my Outgoing folder, and they never go out. I've set up the smtp settings to read:
smtp.emalhost.com:587, but it still doesn't work. This happened once before, and I was able to get it fixed, but I've not lost the information or can't remember, so I'm stuck. I'm about to give up on Evolution, but I'd hate to do it after having painfully built my extensive address book from scratch! Thanks for any help you may provide.

Thats less likely to be a evolution problem. but possible.

Server is accepting connections, because I can send email through a different mail client, such as Outlook (in Windows--I have a double boot system), and GNU Mail in Linux; I'd stay with GNU Mail, but it's not very stable in my Gnome environment.

I don't think Evolution takes it in that format, but rather you enter the SMTP address and ports seperately in the configuration. As a test, create a new account altogether and go through the setup druid. See if it connects after letting it build a fresh configuration. Also have you checked for any change with regard to TLS or similar?

Evolution doesn't allow one to specify the port. I believe it defaults to a standard port. I've read some posts on this subject, and the workaround they give is by doing just what I did (inserting the required port after a colon during setup). In fact, this is one of the peeves that people have expressed about Evolution: the fact that one cannot specify the port either for incoming or outgoing mail.

Most people use Evolution like that. Its been suggested in many guides but not in official documentation. and also it never worked for me because gmail uses 587 too.
    smtp.emalhost.com:587
haydemon are you sure the server isnt using any encryption?

Strange, because I have Evolution set up at home to retrieve my gmail and it does!

smtp is for sending only, while fetching mail from IMAP and POP works cause they work on default ports on gmail.

Right! You're so right! I meant to say that I can not just RECEIVE, but also SEND mail at home via Evolution with a gmail addy.
