There can be broken package or misconfigured package causing this.
but when do you get this screen actually?
before grub screen or after selecting entry from grub?
or at boot splash screen of ubuntu?

The black screen that says Ubuntu is the GRUB screen (GRUB is the loader program) and the splash screen is the one with the bar that goes to 100%. Since you see these, I'm guessing that the error comes after that. What graphics card do you have?

I may have asked this in another thread... was it an ATI card?

The selection screen where timer comes up giving you option regular generic kernel entry Or recovery mode Or memtest+
(in Ubuntu it shows press ESC to enter boot menu)
The splash screen is where there is Ubuntu in middle on screen and a orange progress bar under that logo.

You are getting error after the booting, when it attempts it to start X.

when you boot select the recovery mode on grub selection screen(by pressing ESC. when it says loading grub). then a dailog will come, select try to fix X server.

X_X, I can't say that you get system crashed after updating on second install.
for that i must know the cause of crash, which is getting formatted for second install.
but good luck with reinstall and updating

I had the same issue and I just ended up selecting the option to fix the X server and then all was right in my world again. I laughed the other night because I got this message that something like 275 updates were available. I started the update at 9 PM and went to bed and it was finishing up at around 5 AM when I woke up again. I must admit, after all those updates I was very surprised to see everything working fine afterward. And then I had 30-some more updates yesterday. I'm wondering why there are so many updates so frequently and who is putting them out there but as long as the system keeps running smoothly, I'm happy.

All the various packages and files may have different maintainers. So each one gets patched or updated at different intervals. A patch here, bug fix there...
