Blank CD not detected in Ubuntu 8.10

I have installed Ubuntu 8.10 since couple of months. I have been easily using my CD-ROMs to read but today i found that Blank CDs are not found to be detected.

The problem is that since Blank CD is not detected all my CD Burners won't work for writing data to CD.

Please guide me through this problem and share your experiences if any on same

    Thanks
    Chaitanya

I guess you are using Gnome, Whenever you insert a blank disk. it will be mounted and shown on desktop as Blank disc.

Are you sure the CD is blank and clean?
Have you tried any other blank CD?
better to know before trying something on drive X_x

I had this occur to me once using Debian. Blank discs used to show up on the desktop as b2bwild mentioned, and one day stopped, and I couldn't for the life of me get any blank disc to be recognized. I was very new to linux at the time, and I never found a solution. I ended up reinstalling and I haven't had the problem reoccur since.

I would assume now it might have something to do with HAL, but I'm afraid I still don't know what happened to break it or how to fix it. You could try upgrading to 9.04.
