Media player advise needed
Hi Guys
I have changed number two box over to Ubuntu and to be honest loving it so far. At this point I am trying to find the best application for media playing. I have tried mplayer but having difficulty with Mpeg4 formats. The player appears to work okay until we switch to full screen then we have a lockup of the app.
Anyone help with some application advice regarding media playing, is this the best app to use? it appears to have all the codecs.
I have the same problem with the TV player. If you could see what happens you probably would say the PC is to slow and while it’s my old 1.2G box Windows media player had no problems.
Cheers majestictwo

Two other media players that you can try:
Kaffeine
VLC Media Player
Kaffeine will need the mplayer codecs installed, if you haven't done so already.
Mplayer - binary codecsPaul

You will need libdvdvss and win32 codecs which are also in Synaptic. Install those also.

Add the Medibuntu repositories to your sources list. Use the line that fits your Ubuntu release. Then libdvdcss and win32 will show up in Synaptic. Follow Waterheads advice and use his link to install the needed codecs in Maplayer also. It's a good suggestion for ya.

Actually, my link is for manually installing the win32 codecs. If you can install them from a repository, then that would be easier. Sometimes it is called w32 codecs.
EDIT: In fact, the package that you want to install is called w32codecs.

Unless you are using the 64-bit version of Ubuntu, then you want w64codecs.
