Microphone doesn't work with Skype

I cannot get the microphone working with Skype. My PC is Intel based machine using Soundblaster Live audio card. I'm using Ubuntu 8.10.

Check volume control..on gnome panel.
Right click it.
Open volume control.
Check your input/capture is no muted.
(Must confirm first about the problem)

No, where can I find the application? I don't have it with that name.

What kind of mic are you using? I have a bluetooth headset w/ mic that works just fine with Ubuntu 9.04 on my Dell D630 laptop.

There is normal sound recorder utility. in gnome,
If your sound output is working there is less likely to have problem in your mic configuration. and alsa/oss setup.

I'm using a standard headset, nothing special. There are several links on the internet about non-working mics with Skype/Ubuntu

What do you mean by "standard headset"? Is it USB, connected directly to your audio card, bluetooth, infrared wireless, other wireless? Without more information, we cannot really help you much. The make, model, and how connected to the system are minimal data points.
