    Nvidia driver ubuntu 9.04

My X session starts fine with the default settings, which are vesa, I have 2 nvidia geforce go 7900 gs cards and an sli bridge in my laptop (Alienware Aurora M9700). I am trying to set up video with the proprietary drivers so that i can have 3d support, but I'm having problems.
for both the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.51-pkg2.run file from nvidia's site and using the latest drivers from envyng-qt 180.44-0ubuntu1 I get a fatal error saying that there are no screens detected.

I have a widescreen generic 1440x900 monitor, but it doesn't detect it, yet the install detected it by default.

Any hints on what to do?

    Thanks!

    P.S. Never buy alienware!

Have you tried to install Nvidia driver through Hardware Driver option available in Administrative Menu?

    NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.51-pkg2.run file
Have you install 64bit version of Ubuntu?
    Post the output of this
    Code:
    uname -a
Post the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf file too.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Sorry it took me so long to get back, I had finals and didn't have time to worry about it. I downloaded the 64 bit version of ubuntu, output of uname -a is:

    blueblob@blueblob-laptop:~$ uname -a
    Linux blueblob-laptop 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:58:03 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Yes, that is 64 bit, so the instruction that Casper left should do the trick.

I tried System->Administration->hardware drivers and it didn't work, it gave me a black screen and i had to do the dpkg --reconfigure thing, I'd try it again, but I can't because it doesn't load any drivers, the box appears blank.

I tried using the hardware drivers after updating the list. The log file makes it seem like it detects both video cards, but doesn't detect either video card as the primary card, and doesn't detect my monitor either. This is my Xorg.0.log file:
