Troubles configuring internet on ubuntu 9.04

Hi guys, here s what it is.I have a dell XPS m 1530 (awesome machine by the way) and I ve installed ubuntu 9.04 through wubi on it last week.It is also running vista and win 7 beta on two separate partitions. The thing is, I m not able to get the internet to work as a wired connection with ubuntu.I ve been looking all over the net for a solution to this problem and have found nothing.

I ve also noticed that when I m using w7 or vista the little yellow led on the ethernet port blinks (signallig network traffic I presume) But when i ve booted into ubuntu the yellow led does not work.Just the orange led remains on at all times,I assume that this is a problem with the port itself.

    I d like some help here.Thanks.

That's the XPS laptop, correct? What is the ethernet chip set in that bugger? You might need a new driver for it. What about wireless?

I just remembered, if you have your wireless enabled, then Linux might disable the wired connection to avoid conflicts. My D630 Latitude has a switch to disable the wireless when necessary. Does the XPS?

Thanks for the reply buddy......as I see it....the chipset is a marvell yukon 88e8040 pci e and the wireless s an Intel 4965 AGN.....

Yeah the xps does have a switch to turn wireless off..........I ve tried it as well....but then even with the switch off.....no success.I ve heard that the 9.04 has a kernel bug that messes with the wireless connection could this be it? And could u pls tell me how I can install the ethernet drivers?.....I have the updated ones that I ve downloaded from the Dell website but as I said I m an ubuntu dunce.....Could use all the help i can get.

And yeah the wireless works fine.Tried using it with the wifi at coll no problems at all.....like it was an out of the box set up.I have to use the wired connection at home that s the problem here. And when the yellow ethernet port led does not light up it means that the connection is not active.Correct?

Probably. Have you gone into the network manager tool on the top menu bar on your Ubuntu desktop? You should be able to enable the connection there. Sometimes, once it has disabled a connection, it won't automatically start it up even if you think it should. As for the wired chip set, mine has a Broadcom gigabit chipset which seems to work just fine. I'm not familiar with the Marvel chip set, so I cannot really advise you there. As for a kernel bug in 9.04 interfering with wireless, I don't know about that, but it seems that the wireless is not your problem!
