need help getting right resloution for my 40" LCD
Hello there! Finally I am back from the windows world!
I have hit one minor problem though. My main monitor is a Samsung 40" LCD TV that I used with Windows Vista (yuck). I am stuck using my backup monitor and it just sits awkwardly on my desk until I get the LCD working again.
Anyways, the computer is a Gateway. The video card is made by nvidia.
The only resolutions I can pick from (in the Display program) are 1024x768 and smaller
Do I need to install drivers for my video card? or how can I get my TV to work with Ubuntu? Thank you so much!

Yes, you need the nVidia drivers. You can get them from the nVidia web site for your card + OS (32 or 64 bit). You will need to switch to text mode to install them, however. We can help you if you need to know how to do that. Once you do, then you should be able to access the full resolution of the display, which is what, BTW? If it is a full HD display, then it should get something like 1920x1200 or better. I have an nVidia card connected to dual 24" 1920x1200 displays using the digital connectors. I also assume you have any connector converters or cables you might need?

I would probally have to have you help me install them. I was planning on downloading them via the Ubuntu Add/Remove program menu. Should I do it that way? Or manually find/download it and install from there?
Also, the max resolution of my TV (or video card) is 1920x1080
The connection is VGA. Im using it on Vista right now.

Glad it got going. The ones you get from the Ubuntu package manager have the kernel module pre-compiled for you, so you don't need to switch to text mode to install them. I run Ubuntu on my laptop and CentOS/RHEL on my workstation. On the workstation, I have to manually install them since the nvidia driver available via the package manager is an older beta version and doesn't work so well on my dual-monitor setup.
