Sound System? The only tabs I have when I go to Settings > Configure Amarok are:

    General
    Collection
    Internet Services
Playback (under playback I can only set fade, and an option for "resume playback")
    OSD

I cant find anything like "sound system" What am I doing wrong?

There are no longer any configuration options in Amarok as it is all handled through Phonon. Sounded like a good idea at the time....

Anyway you still can't get any sound from Amarok? Reinstalling applications won't do anything as the configurations are kept in your home directory: deleting the configuration has the same effect as reinstalling would in Windows. This may sound silly but have you tried restarting pulseaudio or rebooting your system since?

yes I have done everything as well as rebooted, etc. nothing seems to be working. What could possibly be wrong? Is there any kind of diagnostics I can do, or maby a log file I can post so somebody else can read the exact error?

My father has been having a similar problem as I mentioned, I will drop over to him and see if I can find any solution and post back.

    Going on a tangent.

Despite the developer warning that Applications should still be able to access other backends for the time being? Brilliant. (Sorry, I still use KDE 3.5; stories like this are why). I don't suppose there's some text file config or something that'll let it define output directly to a classic back like Gstreamer or Xine? Naw, they were too confident weren't they?

    from the amarok support forum:

    quote
    ""
    hi

you should find if you have xine-lib and phonon(kdelib) installed or not...ask your distros support forums if you dont know how to find it out...and if its not installed then install xine-libs and phonon...these two are responsible for sound for amarok

    see this for more info...
    [wiki link, cant post links]

    ""
    end quote

so how do I check if these are installed? Im pretty sure I have already installed phonon because of a previous post on this thread.

thanks guys for your help. Why is this so hard? haha

I think xine-lib is called libxine in Debian/ubuntu packages - you search for it in Synaptic. As to Phonom, you're saying it's kdelib, right? Search for it too.

Open Synaptic Package Manager and do a search for xine and a search for phonon, separately. You'll get a lot of unrelated results too, but you should find some of the more obvious ones that should be checked on.

xine, phonon, etc are all installed according to Synaptic. Here is the log when I run "amarok -d" and copy the part that is created when I double click on a song to play:
