Exclamation Totem will automatically close when playing AVI videos and MP3 audios

    Hello guys, good afternoon.

Guys, I really need you help. Got a problem here with Totem or Movie Player.

I have AVI videos and MP3 videos here. Just recently installed the following:
    1. ubuntu-restricted-extras
    2. build-essential
    3. Skype
    4. Opera Browser
    5. PlayOnLinux
    5. GYacHI
    6. WinFF
    7. Crossover Linux
    8. Mozilla Thunderbird
    9. VLC Media Player

When I tried to play AVI and MP3, the Movie Player will open for awhile and then it will just close. VLC Media Player could play MP3 files but when I tried it with AVI files same with Movie Player. Both Movie Player and VLC Media Player will automatically close when playing AVI videos and MP3 audios.

Is there something I forgot to install?

    or

    This is a bug?

By the way I'm using Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 and the Kernel version is 2.6.28-11-generic. Hope you can help me with this.

    Take care and God bless.

Make sure you've got every last codec known to mankind

    Step 1:
    - Go into "System > Adminstration > Software Sources"
    - Make sure the first 4 boxes are turned on
    - If you want, you could even go to the next tab overand enale all the third party sources
    - If it asks you to relaod anything, say yes. (here and any time later)

    Step 2:
    - Go into "Applications > Add/Remove..."
    - Make sure the drop-down near the top of the screen is set to "All Available Applications"
    - Type "gstreamer" in the search field at the top.
    - Install everything that it will let you that looks like it has something to do with mp3, aci, aac, etc. etc.

    It should work now.
When I find myself burried in errors, Windows Help appears to me; speaking words of wisdom, Reboot!

Open VLC through the terminal and look for errors, ie, from the terminal type vlc /path/to/movie.avi replacing with the appropriate path to the movie file. My guess is you'll get an error reading
    Code:
    BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
X Error of failed request: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
If that is the case, my other guess is that you have an intel graphis card. Open a terminal, type lspci and post the output.

You may have luck opening your video file from the terminal with vlc -vout X11 /path/to/video.avi

Agreed. Some video drivers cause this in certain circumstances, like if Compiz is enabled. Try forcing various video modes instead of just going with Default (which is usually xv), starting with x11.

Unfortunately, I don't think this is just the issue with compiz, but due to the regressions in the intel driver in Jaunty. I seen a lot of other people with this and similar issues.

From what I've seen, if you're effected, the only real solutions right now are to downgrade the intel driver or upgrade the kernel and driver.

    Hello guys, good evening.

Everyhting works fine now. I just followed this post. And it's said that All I have to do is go to System => Preferences => Multimedia System Selector and changed the video output to something other than auto detect.

After that I can now play AVI and MP3 files. It is said as well in that topic that just like you said that instead og using the Intel driver I just need to install the VESA driver.

Thanks again guys and God bless.
