[SOLVED] Ubuntu 9.04 and VLC
Hello everyone,
I just installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my brother's computer and then installed VLC. There is a problem with 2 windows opening up and not being able to play movies. There is a sound but no pictures. Only a black screen, and a new window opening up instead of playing in the first window. I checked on the internet, found few things but doesn't work neither.
So I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on virtual on my laptop. Everything was fine.... Then installed VLC and got the same problem. At first I thought it had something to do with his computer but seeing that this is the same on mine, I would like some advices or help with this. Oh ! One more thing, I managed to play 1 or 2 movies to try out something but it is sooooooooooooo slow that it is like looking at pictures on a slide show.
As I mentionned, I checked few things but doesn't resolve the problem.
Thanks a lot.

Hello emanjamin2002, good evening.

Questions:
1. Did you already installed the ubuntu-restricted-extras, gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg and gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly?
2. What's your video driver? is it Intel video driver?
Take care and God bless.

Hi Shengton,
1. Yes I did install those.
2. Video driver is Mobile Intel 4 series Express Chipset Family.
Note too that I have Ubuntu installed on VMWare but it does the same as well on physical installation on another computer.

Hi Emmanuel. It's an incompatibility that's being addressed it seems. I can't post links here but you may go to ubuntuforums (dot) org (slash) showthread (dot) php (question mark) t (equal sign) 1137066

Hello emanjamin2002, good afternoon.
Since you're using Intel it could be a video driver bug or a codec problem(I guess).
According to this post from bugs.launchpad.net: Intel video card driver does not work well in 9.04. So I guess this may be the cause.
Things you should do:
1. Go to System => Preferences => Multimedia System Selector and changed the video output to something other than auto detect.
2. If the first step doesn't work, change your Intel video driver to "vesa".
Thanks again guys and God bless.

Thanks Redubuntu,
Yes I love ubuntu but the new version seems to have small bugs which is usual when a new version comes out but OK, I would prefer to have it perfect like others. But not a problem, thanks to those make it for us.

Keep in mind, there are other suitable media players available and all of them are very cool in their own ways.
Kaffeine, Mplayer, Audacious, Amarok, these are just but a few of the available players.
