    extracting woes...

I swear that i can't get anything to co-operate with me....

I just downloaded some torrent files so that I can learn more about Linux shells. The .zip files extracted fine, but there was one .rar file and two .7z files that I cannot extract/open. I have both unrar and 7zip but neither program seems to be working...

When I cd to the directory of the archives and run 7zip for extraction, it tells me that there is no such archive. YES, THERE IS! And when I try to extract the .rar file, it seems to work... but then there's nothing in the file, its just a folder. Yet I spent like 20 minutes downloading it. Just so you know, these were good torrent files; a lot of people made them work... unless they've just gone bad or something...

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong/ not doing? Thanks.

You need a rar extractor. Try installing the 'unrar' application. It should be accessible to your package manager. I use it all the time.

So you did - in the "fine print". What errors did you get?

"Archive does not exist" on 7zip.

Unrar(via command line) shows me the content of the torrent when I try to extract... and then says "failed" by them. like it tried to extract but failed for whatever reason... I'll have to try again to see if there a specific error message, I don't think there is with Unrar though...

When I right-click extract, it acts like it works; I get an openable folder... but then its empty, just a folder...

Try from the command line and post the errors (if any) here. It is possible that the archive is a version that unrar doesn't support.

Maybe its the files themselves. Torrents may not be the most reliable sources depending on what you are getting...

Okay, here's one of the .7z files. They all give the same error:

    XXX@XXX:~/Dls$ 7z x shell-scripting.7z

    7-Zip 4.58 beta Copyright (c) 1999-2008 Igor Pavlov 2008-05-05
    p7zip Version 4.58 (locale=en_US.UTF-8,Utf16=on,HugeFiles=on,2 CPUs)

    Error:
    there is no such archive

But I do think you are right. I went to try the torrents again, and Ktorrent reported missing files on some of my torrents and asked me if I wanted to re-load those files. We'll see how that goes... maybe I just missed some important files.

edit: no change at all... I've tried like 5 different .7z and .rar files... none of them are working...

    It must be me..

    Here's my process:

cd to the directory of the file I want to extract, in this case: cd ~/Dls

    Then I run: 7z x filename.7z via the terminal.

Is that right? I do the same with .rar, except I replace 7z with unrar.

Here's a more detailed error that i got when I tried to extract:

    7-Zip 4.58 beta Copyright (c) 1999-2008 Igor Pavlov 2008-05-05
    p7zip Version 4.58 (locale=en_US.UTF-8,Utf16=on,HugeFiles=on,2 CPUs)

Error: /home/x/Dls/100 Best SNES Games Ever/ActRaiser 2 (U) [!].7z is not supported archive

    Errors: 1

Also, I have some that say .chm and .smc.7z. What do I do with those?
