    ubuntu server edition question

I'm thinking of using a dell desktop as a repository for music, pictures, print server, and a test MySQL database accessed through apache2.
Do these requirements warrant the Ubuntu server edition or will the desktop version be sufficient?

Can someone's experience outline the possible benefits installing server edition?

    Thanks

The desktop edition should be just fine for this. You will want to enable (and possibly install) the Samba server (handles file and print server tasks) and the MySQL database, as well as the Apache/Tomcat servers. This is not difficult. Configuration of the servers will be your biggest task.

    Thanks Rubberman
I'll give it a shot with the desktop version,,, probably stable 8.04. There should be enough info at that level to figure out the server configuration settings.

The only real advantages of the server edition are that PAE is enabled in the kernel and it has no gui by default which is what you want for a real live server. You can run any server software on the desktop edition.

It is only called the desktop edition because the default software is set up that way. Unlike MS there is no difference in licensing between the editions.
