Most Linux distros are similar but certain things vary like you have discovered. If you are just getting started with Ubuntu, take a look at help.ubuntu.com/.

Fedora is sponsored by Red Hat so it will be more like RHEL 4, except that Fedora is the most bleeding edge OS in the world (just see what they made in 6 months!!!) where RHEL 4 is a few years old and meant for servers. Both also use the RPM package management system, while Ubuntu uses DEB.
The new version 11 will be released in 10 days, so you may want to give it a try.

If you want something exactly like RHEL then have a look at Centos. It is RHEL just re-badged and recompiled and without the support contract. It is fine for desktop and server but as you probably know fon't expect bells and whistles - they are not a priority in an enterprise distro.

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

Your best chance for success with Linux is to pick the distro that you like best for your own personal tastes and computer hardware, then take the time needed to learn to use it.

That said, they all use the Linux kernel along with any patching or changes done by the kernel devs for each distro, and the same goes for the software devs and application packages included with each distro. The package managers used are quite often very different, and you'll find that some distros use sudo by default (ubuntu, for instance), whereas others don't.

Most commands should work with just about any distribution, but it is true that paths might be different.

Hope you are able to find what you are looking for without too much trouble.

well if you are using UBUNTU then i would tell you tah it's basically a client OS whereas RHEL is a Server OS. well the naswer is partially right and partially wrong coz there is no difference of client and server in linux. what it means that the server can be triedinto a client and a client can be turned into a server with installing the necessary packages. so in the bottomline ubuntu supported by canonicaland RHEL supported by Red hat. The ubuntu disk is mostly made forclient side whereas RHELis made for serverpurpose but let me tell again that it'sa matter of choice ofwhich to choose.
