It should work. The Intel 82802H chip controls sound as well as other duties. I had trouble with my HP laptop with Mint 5XFCE on it and finally discovered that I had a sound mute button on. Check for physical sound control button or switch.

The sound devices are all on auto detect - is that correct?
Volume controls are all on full - nothing muted. There's no sound icon in the bottom right hand corner though, like i seem to remember there being last time i used one of these.

Can't find anything else wrong, if you could tell me where to look i'd be appreciative

Bit more info - in the sound preferences page i was testing the sound playback device, the three which start with HDA Intel ALC889 don't work they give an error message "audiotestsrc wave=sine frq=512 ! adsioconvert! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: could not open audio device for playback"

ALSA, ESD, OSS and Pulse Audio all work, but testing gets no sound

I know on mine the sound icon is in the bottom right. It's Mint 5 but shouldn't be much difference. I'll have to figure out how to check for drivers. There should be a sound control somewhere in the main menu-see if that is off.

Do you have a player that has a visible indication of sound, or a video player that shows sound?

I just checked my processes. If you try to play sound, then open a terminal and type:
    Code:
    ps aux
in the last 20 processes it should indicate what sound mixer is running.

Yes, the test graphic in the sounds settings. I also have a movie playing in the background, which i assume i've got all the codecs for (it's a basic divX and i hear linux mint is out-of-the-box with all the codecs to play must formats)

Does it show the sound as working-waveforms or anything?
