Question Install HP C7280 Photosmart Wirelss Printer

When I try to use HPLIP Toolbox it fails to find this printer, which is installed on two computers using vista. When I check for third party drivers this shows non installed. Tried installing Driver Detective but it wouldn't install.
I am new to Ubuntu which I like very much and would like to use as my main operating system but need to have printer availability to completely change over.
Am a relative novice so please step by step answers if possible.

You probably need to install "hpijs-ppds" as well. This is set of printer definition files. To install this simply open Synaptic and enter "hpijs-ppds" (without the quotes) in the search box. Check the box next to it and click apply.

I think Synaptic can be found under System -> Administration -> Package Manager (it's a bit different in Xubuntu )

You will be asked for your password during this process.

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

You should use CUPS for managing all of your printers. It may already be installed, so open a browser and enter this address

    http://localhost:631/

Now, you say it is a wireless printer. Does this mean that it is a network printer? If so, you need to give CUPS the IP address of the printer. This is sometimes difficult to know. I have a print server, meant for Windows, that uses the lp1 designation for the port:
    Code:
    http://192.168.1.72/lp1
I pulled my hair out trying to figure this one out. So I just wanted to through that out there, so that you know about it.

You may be able to get the IP address information from the windows PC. Check the printer's "Properties", and look for that information. Then use it to set up CUPS to connect to the printer.

The OpenPrinting database has more info on your printer, including setup information.

OpenPrinting database - Printer: HP PhotoSmart C7280

I looked at my CUPS installation (Ubuntu 9.04), and it has the HP C7200 driver. I have a HP printer too, so I may have installed the HP drivers package in Synaptic (I don't recall).

Edit: Here are the related packages that I have installed.

    hplip
    hplip-gui
    hplip-data
    hplip-doc
    hpijs
    hpijs-ppds
    cupsddk-drivers
    foomatic-db
    foomatic-database-engine

Thank you all. It has been a long road but I've finally got the HP7280 wireless working with Ubuntu.
Thank you Elija for the information on "hpijs-ppds"
I found the I.P. address which for the C7280 is 192.162.1.171
Finally thanks to whoever gave me theURL of an article on which lead me to The Linux Foundation and a very recent article entitled HP PhotoSmart C7280 (which is not yet included in the Foomatic packages as it has not been proof read) I can recommend this article to any person of limited experience in Ubuntu or Linux struggling with a C7280 installation.I cannot give the URL here since I have not yet contributed 15 posts
Finally the C7200 driver works fine with the C7280.
Thank you all I can now go over almost exclusively to Ubuntu.

    You are very welcome!

Are you referring to a different article, or the same one that I linked to. That article may be a little old, because I already had the driver installed. I actually have two HP printers, so I had already installed all HP printer drivers and software.

Unfortunately I can't show the URL on this site as I have not yet posted 15 times. The article has an introduction headed User-Contributed Entry under which it states that " The data on this page is not verified or proofread" which seemed to indicate it was recent. However there is no date anywhere on the document so it is possible that it has been there for sometime but never actually verified.
At the end of the article it has Copyright 2008 Linux Foundation so it can't be any older than last year.
Hope this goes someway towards answereing your query.

    Thank you all

I found this thread through a Google search. I am relatively new to Ubuntu. After a Vista crash I decided to just switch over to Ubuntu, cold turkey. I had to then figure out my HP printer connectivity through wireless. I put it off because I thought it would be very complicated. Turns out through Waterhead's link above, the Open Printing link, I figured out to go to System-->Administration-->Printing and set-up the printer through there. I was up and running with a test page in probably 20 seconds after that. Ubuntu quickly found the printer on my wireless network and had the driver installed so fast. Great!
