i am running ubuntu9.04 on one of my systems and xubuntu 8.04 on another older system. i cannot get my dell 725 printer to work on either machine. can anybody help me with this daunting task?

The Dell 725 printer is a "paperweight" according to OpenPrinting.org and will not work with Linux. Hopefully someone else will chime in with better news for you.
