    Question about Ubuntu Live Cd

Okay so this is probably a really stupid question, but I'm just trying to make the switch to Linux.

I booted up my live CD and Ubuntu is running great now. My question is, if I now downloaded something like open office or any other program to run in a Linux environment for that matter, when I logged off and logged back on at a later date, would those programs still be on my Linux desktop, or will they go away when I log off.

Thanks, and sorry if the question is confusing.

    Welcome to the forums!

If you are running Linux from the liveCD, the programs that you add will be gone when you next boot from the CD.

Thanks, for the welcome, and for the quick reply.

This is what I figured would happen. I'm still not comfortable enough with Linux to set up a dual boot, and I don't know how either, so I wouldn't want to mess up my Vista Partition.

When I tried the live CD and decided I liked it I went straight to a dual boot. I asked a couple of basic questions and trust me it was really easy! There are plenty of people here to help you. There should be no reason you should harm your Vista partition at all. If I can do do it you can !

Well, you can use a virtual machine in the beginning to feel more comfortable with linux. And then if you decide to install there are plenty of guides to help you and plenty of people to guide you

    Go ahead and try it

The free LiveCD shipped from Ubuntu is exactly what got me started in Linux with Hardy Herron. I now use Dreamlinux, but the thanks goes to Ubuntu for helping me make the plunge. I still use Ubuntu on my netbook.

I dual booted within XP using the Wubi installer. I did back up my files before trying it (always wise to do). However, the installation and use of Ubuntu never once made any change to XP, other than having a choice at boot up. You can even access your Windows files from within Ubuntu (but not the other way around without some work).

I really doubt that you will ever regret the installation. Most distros perform differently (and better) from hard drive.
