    [SOLVED] disable automatic .files~

Often Ubuntu automatically creates hidden files which are copies of regular files. For example, if I have a file named /home/mike/song.mp3 Ubuntu will create the file /home/mike/.song.mp3~

I'd like to disable this feature. It uselessly takes up space and these files often hang around even after the originals are deleted. Anyone know how to disable this annoying behavior? Also, anyone know what directories are effected by this? I know /home does this, but I'd bet most of the others don't.

The disabling of automatic file backups are usually done at the individual application level. In gedit for example, it's disabled at Edit > Preferences > Editor > File Saving

Check any application(s) that you are working with for an option to disable auto backups.

Note that changing it in gedit will only stop backups in gedit.

You'll need to check each app that you use for disabling any undesired auto backups.

right right. That worked for gedit. I'll check the other apps as I use them. Thanks!
