How to keep permissions over SMB/tar

    Hi,

I am want to use backup-manager to back up my entire system, so I want to keep permissions/ownerships as the are. backup-manager makes tar archives, which are copied to my home file server through an SMB mounted directory.

Does that keep permissions in tact?

I also have ssh access to the server. Can I use that? I think I can only if I run backup-manager from the server, but I am not sure.
OS's I use: Debian testing, Debian stable, Ubuntu, Windows XP, Windows Vista
