9.04 Trash and other icons on desktop?
Hi...
I can't get the trash icon to appear on my 9.04 desktop.
I've seen this now on two virgin 9.04 installs.
gconf-editor -> apps -> nautilus -> desktop -> select trash and other icons to appear on the desktop. But they don't.
Ubuntu is updated and upgraded.
Sorting desktop icons by name doesn't help.
gconf-editor -> apps -> nautilus -> preferences -> show desktop = checked.
Driving me nuts. Any suggestions?

Well I'll be.
You'll just have to take my word about this and not assume I'm an idiot, delusional, or fibbing. I swear I could not get the icons to appear using gconf-editor. A checkmark is a checkmark is a checkmark. All all the appropriate checkboxes were checked. No icons.
Until now. Without touching the computer since yesterday, other than to try dragging an icon to the desktop.
Just makes no sense. But it's working now.
Sheesh.

I wasn't paying attention to you saying show_desktop was checked. I know it does happen that if show_desktop is change, I have to log out and back in before it takes affect sometimes (or do something else I don't know about). I'm using 9.04 and it does work for me, with show_desktop checked and the icons checked, so that is strange (especially a fresh installation ...)

Solved it.
$ sudo gconf-editor to add the icons to the desktop won't work.
Have to call gconf-editor without sudo for the icons to appear.
Not sure why, but that's what was happening to me.
Edit: I guess in hindsight it sorta makes sense. The icons would appear on the root's desktop? And, I'm not sure why I was using sudo. Bad habit I guess.

It completely slipped my mind, but I have had strange problems like this before. I didn't use sudo, but when I used gconf-editor from the command-line the changes wouldn't show up, and when I used it from the main menu, they would.
