windows, linux, partitions, removal
Hello, smart person who might be able to help me!
this thing long, and it has 2 parts, so please, please bear with me.
I'm in a bit of trouble. i'm a total beginner with linux.
I have XP installed in a pc with 2 HDDs.
Today i had some problems running xp so i wanted to install ubuntu 8.10 in a partition of my second (d:\) drive to see if i could find anything wrong in xp from linux.
during the install, it asked me about partitions, and i chose guided partition, on the d: drive. it showed me a bar (which i'm beginning to think was a slider) with some percentages. i continued with the install. It worked out fine.
In the end, i couldn't even access the c:, windows drive from d:, linux. so i decided to forget about it before i caused more problems. nor can i access drive d:\ from windows (c:\).
To remove linux from the computer, do i have to use an xp cd? and will using the fixmbr command delete everything? i'm a bit scared i'll do something wrong, because i'm in what is new territory for me.
the other question is: did installing linux delete all the files i had in my second drive? (i think the partition window during the install had the number 100% on it. but it looked like a bar that was showing something, and not a slider).
edit: i just checked the "filesystem" drive (i'm assuming that's my d:\) and it apparently has 150,000 files & 3.3 GB in use. i don't know if a clean ubuntu install is supposed to have that many files- perhaps those are the old files i'm looking for, only i can't see them on ubuntu.
i'm not sure if i'm making myself clear, i'm not quite myself. ask anything you deem necessary.
please help! i'm at a complete loss here.
thank youLast edited by verycomplicated; 06-23-2009 at 01:51 AM. Reason: please!

welcome to the forum

well, if you're prepared to lose everyhing on that drive,
then re-partitioning would be a simple way. If you haven't
"partition magic" I'd suggest "gparted," bootable freeware.the sun is new every day (heraclitus)

Welcome to the forums!
To remove Linux, you can either format your Linux partitions, or remove them. However, you'll need to restore the Windows bootloader after doing so before you can boot into Windows. A simple utility for handling partitioning chores is gparted which can be found on the Parted Magic, and it runs directly from the liveCD.
To restore the Windows bootloader, you can boot with a Windows emergency boot disk and run the following command:
...or you can boot with the Windows installation CD and from the Recovery Console enter the following command:Code:fdisk /mbr
Doing either one of those should rewrite the MBR (master boot record) allowing you to reboot directly into Windows.Code:fixmbr
If neither of those options are available to you, try using the current version of the SuperGRUB LiveCD. It's a small download and quick burn to CD, and it's a good tool for working with Linux, and/or Windows bootloader issues. Just follow the menu driven prompts for using it.
Hope it all works out well for you.
Edit: Oops... looks like tpl was faster than me!
