Intermittent - display goes blank
Hi,
I'm running 8.10 on an desktop, and very intermittently after I logon and then leave the machine for a few hours, upon my return the display is blank. System is still up. I do a ATL-CTL F3 and logon to another session ok, but when I return (alt-ctl f7), the display is blank and no way to wake it up.
I usually logon to another session and reboot, then all is fine until the next time.
Is the something I can look at in the alternate session to give me a hint as to what is wrong, or even how can I terminate the display on that session and restart it?
Thanks.Ubuntu 11.04 on IBM ThinkCentre

GRUB Fedora / Windows 7, VMware Player (Windows 2008 server) on NCIX quad core PC.

its the bios
I had similar problem using another o.s and it was a setting in the bios I think it thas the powersave section if you can find it change the setting to allways on ill get back to you on this later to tell you were it is on my bios menu. If you dont know how to enter the bios its either del f10 or any other combination of f keys but that should solve your problem ill shut down my computer and check wich menu it was and get back to you.

Please let me know if it worked if not ive no idea im an amature. I really dont know why they gave me that option on my mother board seams a bit sill its like giving you the option stable or unstable.

Thanks for the reply,
I checked my bios settings under "Power options" and there was one setting that suggested all devices will be left with power on after a period of inactivity, but a subsequent reboot and when I just left the screen at the logon to Ubuntu screen for a few hours, the display was tuned off upon my return.
I removed the plug for the screen and powered it back on and then the display was there.
hmm, strange problem.Ubuntu 11.04 on IBM ThinkCentre

it's probably some sort of energy saving function on your monitor then i imagine. I have a powersave option on my monitor but its never given me any problems as yet.
