screen going black

i'm very very very new to linux, ubuntu, and everything associated with it. i just installed ubuntu today. after i got the advanced screen effects to work, i.e: screen cube, my mouse started turning the screen black.

everything my mouse touches turns black. until eventually the entire screen is black and i cant see anything to click it. i know that i still have the ability to click it, because if i try really quickly when the desktop comes up, then i can click system, or accessories it just turns it black after a second.

please help because i want to figure all of this out.

b.t.w., if i sit for a few minutes after the entire screen has turned black, then it reappears again, only with an upside down screen where nothing is clickable. but if i move my mouse too much then it just goes back to black again.


someone please help.


i'm almost sure its something that i turned on on the effects.

only thing is with the screen turning black i cant get in to unselect anything.

what video card do you have? Also, have you tried turning off the effects? And what version of Ubuntu are you running?

ok video card idk?? how can i figure that out? not my computer lol.

and ya i've tried turning off the effects but i cant get to them because the screen goes black 100% of the time and it does it right after i log in.

and its version 9.04

i don't want to uninstall and reinstall ubuntu.

So I was looking through some setting in Compiz in System -> Preferences -> Compiz something.

It was the window with checkboxes for different desktop effect, I enabled a few but then when I clicked to enable the "window minimize effect" , all windows and menus went black!

I managed to shut down the system safely, upon next boot the same thing happened! I can't use any menus and any windows opened instantly turn black.

I'm not experienced enough with a command line to know if I can fix this through there but please help!
