    Webcam and Ubuntu

    Hi,
I already installed successfully ubuntu jaunty on my pc and my problem right now is how to use my webcam (A4tech PK-635). I know pidgin will not support webcam so is there any alternative to use other than kopete? And also how to test the webcam if it is working in ubuntu or linux in particular?

To test your camera, use cheese. Not the one we eat!!
Install it either from System->Administration->Synaptic or from the terminal:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install cheese
There is also amsn, which supports webcams I think and Skype.

You can also use Ekiga to test the web cam.

why not just use skype? I use it and it works great with the logitech one....I've never been able to figure out Ekiga....plus it's a pain getting windows users to install stuff like that (sometimes...like my boss), but saying "hey let's skype" is so normal these days that windows users don't hesitate to install it

I check the functionality of my webcam with vlc, selecting Streaming from the Media menu.

    Exclamation Webcams?

    Woah,

That's one thing I forgot about!
Does anyone know if Logitech Quick-Cam works on Ubuntu?

By the way, Pidgin comes default with Ubuntu right?

    Does that support webcams?

    Thanks!

Unfortunately, pidgin doesn't support video at this time, though I believe it is on the todo list for a future release. The Quick-Cam should work with Ubuntu. Don't know as I haven't tried one. I use a webcam my wife got for her Mac PowerBook and didn't like. Sort of a hand-me-down, but it works just fine on both my Ubuntu laptop (out-of-the-box) and my CentOS workstation (after installing and configuring the driver). Anyway, I can video message w/ skype on Ubuntu, CentOS, or XP.

yeah I've read that pidgin has indefinitely put off the web cam support right now...I forget where I read that but I think it's because every client uses a different system and it's easy enough just to use skype.

As for logitech quick cam .Mine works no problems except I have to run a special command in skype to make it so the video doesn't show up completely green (Intrepid changed how webcams work with the OS and I think Ubuntu is saying skype needs to fix the problem, skype is thinking it's the changes that Ubuntu made that screwed it up in the first place). All in all I've been happy with my logitech cam
