If I understood correctly, Ubuntu got installed and you have a graphics working fine. It is the download manager that is having issue. I did not understand what you mean by 'download manager'. Is it the 'software package manager' used for installing/uninstalling softwares or a web-browser's (firefox, opera) 'download manager'?
As for your question as to which linux is good for you, there are lot of choices. You may stick with Ubuntu (these issues can be resolved. no need to change distro for it). You may also take a look at Mandriva 2009.1, Linux Mint.A candle looses nothing by lighting other candles. - Khalil Zibran.

I don't know how 'update' program is related to graphics card. But one simple solution would be to disable automatic launch of graphical 'update' program. Somebody using Ubuntu regularly may help you with this.
You may use 'apt-get' or 'aptitude' from command-line for any install/uninstall/update activities. Don't worry they are very easy to use (atleast after using 2-3 times). Plus are very stable and powerful programs. Trust me you don't have to go back the Windows path...or even change distro either for this issue. I feel the same sometimes too. But that is because I am new to Linux. (I may have 1 year exposure, but used to like DOS before 98 came out), but I know what you mean about MS products all the new ones really suck. I even got the Vista enterprise super-duper version but it would reject just about every hardware I had, I too like MSI and Asus mobos but I mean my brand new Netgear NIC wasnt good enough for vista, my ATI all in wonder which I paid 290 bucks for, was not good, neither my turtle beach sound card which II got for free off a brand new dell machine lol (this was while back tho)
Any way (Which version of Ubuntu are you using?) I really like Ubuntu 8.xx but the new 9.x version is really annoying and has a lot of bugs in it, not software bugs but things that bug the hell out of me like cannot set my monitor type plus bunch of other things which I used to could do with previous version but cant now!
So I suggest as Saivin already said to stay with Ubuntu.
It is still a lot better than most other OSes.
I also run mine as root all day long. hekk it is my machine and if I trash it, big deal I make another one.
But at work or if working on someone else's machine logging in as root can be very hazardous.
So be careful!
Good Luck!
