Installing Ubuntu 9.04 with Windows Vista
Hi, I just bought a new HP computer that came with Windows Vista installed, and I want to try Ubuntu Linux. I downloaded Ubuntu and burned it to a CD as the website instructed, and when I open the CD it tells me to either restart the computer to try booting from the disc or install it within Windows. Rebooting from the CD gave me an error about being unable to read the disc, even though the Ubuntu menu loaded. The error happens when I choose any of the options.
Trying to install within Windows, I get the error
"Permission denied
For more information, please see the log file
c:\users\adam\appdata\local\temp\wubi-9.04-rev128.log"
I looked at the log file but it's gibberish to me.
Anyone know how I can get Ubuntu running on my computer?

welcome to the forum
> install ubuntu on vista machine
unless you take steps in advance, the microsoft OSs avail themselves
of all available disk space, so there's no room left over for anything else.
but with a diskpartitioning program such as "gparted," you can cut that
vista installation back by shrinking its disk space, leaving some for
ubuntu. Personally, I generally go for a 50/50 splitthe sun is new every day (heraclitus)

If you are trying to install using Wubi to a location that you do not have write permissions to you will need to run as administrator. When starting the installer, right click on it and choose "Run as administrator..." to be prompted for your password.
In the short term I'd be more worried about the disc reading error though - I wouldn't try to install until you have covered that off. Have a look at this tutorial on md5 checksums. This is a way of verifying that the download/burn was successful and will help avoid trouble during the installation.

I did install UBUNTU 9.04 in my Dell XPS 1330 laptop and did these following steps:
1) Made some free space available using the Windows Disk Utility.
Follow these steps to resize an existing partition on a computer's hard disk drive when using Windows Vista:
1. Click the Windows Vista Start button.
2. Right-click Computer.
3. Click Manage. The Computer Management window will open.
4. Click Storage in the pane at left, then double-click Disk Management in the pane at right.
5. Right-click one of the rectangular partition areas in the lower part of the window. (The heading at the left of the existing partitions will probably be "Disk 0" or "Disk 1".) A menu of options will pop up.
6. Click Extend or Shrink to change the size of the partition.
The options available will vary depending upon the current size and status of the partition. Options that are not available will appear 'grayed-out' in the options menu.
2) Rebooted the computer with the Ubuntu CD put in, it booted fine from the CD, but somehow did not run through teh screens of install. I tried urning several CD's, still no go.
3) Used wubi.exe from Windows Vista to install Ubuntu on to the newly created free space. This also saved from erasing off the Windows Boot Manager (a grub like concept introduced by microsoft , which vista needs to boot into windows).
4) Rebooted laptop and booted into Ubuntu.
ALL WORKED FINE.
