Wireless is not recognized - I've tried everything!

I just installed ubuntu 9.04 on my computer today, and I was having trouble getting ubuntu to recognize my wireless card.

I looked online and it seemed that because I have a Broadcom 4318 card, I need proprietary firmware, and the way to get this was to install b43-fwcutter. So I tried that following the directions on linuxwireless

First I attempted to just use "sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter" but that returned an error "E: couldn't find package b43-fwcutter"

Then I attempted the process which linuxwireless told me to, and everything seemed to work and b43-fwcutter seemed to install, but when i restarted, my wireless card still wasn't recognized and I was back to square one...

    Help?

    Re: Wireless is not recognized

Are you running Gnome or KDE? I was having a similar issue in which wireless worked in Gnome but not KDE.

Do you have Network Manager installed? Try finding it in Synaptic Package Manager first. Or, in KDE you can hit Alt+F2 and enter nm-applet in the box. This should initiate the connection process.

You first need to be connected to the internet with a wired connection. Then you can install the b43-firmware package. During the installation, when it asks:"Download and install firmware?", answer "Yes" (press enter).
