Upgraded to 9.02: Blank Screen after Login

I was upgrading from Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04 this morning. It was downloading through upgrade manager. I left the room (forgetting the laptop was running on battery power). I returned and the battery had died.

When I rebooted I got the newfangled 9.04 login screen. But after I log in I get a blank beige screen and a cursor.

Help. I've used Ubuntu for a couple years now and love it. But I'm also pretty ignorant about troubleshooting.

Might this be something related to the battery dying will upgrade was running? Or is this the issue that several people have experienced with 9.04?

    Thanks.

    I'm using a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4527

    Hi and Welcome !

Press Alt+Ctrl+F3 at Login Screen. Does it switch to command line mode? Login there and execute this
    Code:
    grep -i driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    Post output here.

Press Alt+Ctrl+F7 to switch back to GUI.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
