    Red face synaptic package manager not working HELP!!!

    I am getting the following errors now when I try and load synaptic package manager.

    E: Type '<!DOCTYPE' is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
    E: The list of sources could not be read.
    Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
    E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

    I was trying to get the libdvdcss2 and libdvdcss3 codecs loaded and kept trying different commands until I screwed it up. I just want to play and watch DVD's and I want my package manager back.

    this is the etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list

    it says I do not have permission to save so I can't make any changes????

    This should get you fixed up. To do editing you'll have to do t as "sudo" as regular user doesn't have the necessary permissions. So if you were editing your sources.list with gedit, open a terminal and go instead:
    Code:
    sudo gedit etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
    It will ask for your password. Enter it and continue. Once the proper edits are made, save and exit. Then run:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    Then try Synaptic again.

    You're on the right track with getting mediabuntu going. See this for a complete "how to." Good luck!

    okay. I did this:

    sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/`lsb_release -cs`.list --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list; sudo apt-get -q update; sudo apt-get --yes -q --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring; sudo apt-get -q update

    then this:

    sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/jaunty.list --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list

    and:
    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get update

    also this:

    sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2

    still no video???? Thank you Dan for your help so far. What am I missing??

    Don't know. Did you get any error messages when doing any of these or did they go smoothly? Did you install the codecs?
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install w32codecs
    Post any error messages you are getting.

    Hey Dan!

    Well I think I know why it did not work I am using a Gateway laptop that I bought less than two years ago. Well the LCD went out about 6 months ago and so I bought a new laptop and left the "old" one to lie in it's box. I scavenged the HDD and got rid of winblows and put Ubuntu 8.10 on there and attached the HDD to my very old POS HP Pavillion. It ran fine except it would not recognize my ATI 9250 card. I grew tired of the intel onboard card (even though it worked fine except no effects )

    Anyway, I originally thought the grapghics card had gone bad on the laptop and then decided to test it out. Ubuntu 9.04 would not work on the old desktop even with the intel card so I decided to put the 9.04 disk in the laptop and see if it worked with the external display and it did loaded fine without a HDD!!!

    So when I went to set up the DVD player I believe and I could be wrong but that Ubuntu since it is reading dual displays is causing the video to black out. This is actually the computer doing this. So I need to turn off the display for the laptop and hopefully it will then work for me.

    Thank You for your help. Hopefully I can turn the display off on the laptop and get video. It is going to be awhile before i get the LCD on the laptop fixed.
