Just search Ubuntu Packages at ubuntu official website.

You don't need an antivirus, but you can install Clamav to stay completely safe.

    sudo apt-get install clamav

There are tons of packages available in Ubuntu Sources. There is no need to download and install those any package manually. Synaptic Package Manger will do this for you.

Open Synaptic Package Manager ( Its in System - Administration Menu ) and click on Reload button. It will fetch latest list of packages from sources. Select any package you want to install, mark it and click on Apply button.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Applications - Add/Remove gives a list of most commonly used packages only. Its a good place to start for new users though.

It's true, GetDeb rocks! You should definitely install Ubuntu Tweak.
