    Question connecting TalkTalk broadband

Hi; hope someone can help. I've just installed Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Windows XP, and can't work out how to connect to the internet. The TalkTalk installation CD only says for Windows or Mac, has anyone got an idea how I configure settings in Ubuntu so I can use the TalkTalk broadband connection? Thanks in advance for any help!

What type of broadband is it? Is it cable, phone/ADSL or something else?

How do you connect? Are you using a router? Is it over a network cable or USB?

The installation CD won't be any good to as internet connections are usually no more than just plugging in or at most using PPP to provide a username and password. Please provide as much information as you can.

Plug your computer into the router with a ethernet cable. Look at the booklet that came with the router and find its address and user/password. A typical address would be something like 10.0.0.2 and user admin, password admin or 1234. Type the address into the address bar of your browser.

Look at the menu options and select anything like WAN settings or setup. Some routers will have a quick setup section. The user name for TalkTalk is your telephone number @talktalk.co.uk Your password will be that 10 character one that came with your documentation (a1b2c7w7d2) If you need it the MTU setting is 1432 althought 1400 works just as well.

An extra thought- If you have set it up in XP, the settings will be correct in the router and you only have to plug the ethernet cable in. If it's the usb model from talktalk then you are on your own. Buy an adsl router for about £20.

Hi, thanks and sorry for lack of info. Connection is over a phone line (ADSL) through a USB modem (from TalkTalk), I don't have a router, but can get one if it's needed. I tried the "help" in ubuntu, but couldn't work out what I should type in to the manual connection. Sorry if this seems a bit dumb but I'm not very tech savvy. Hope the above gives you some clues, thanks again!

You can get some of the USB modems working from what I hear but there is a good bit of work in it. I know this doesn't sound great but you might be better off getting an ADSL router. They can be cheap enough and it also means you can have more than one device connected to the internet such as a games console, BluRay player or even just another PC/laptop.

At that point you get to just plug in your network cable and you're good to go, no matter what system you're using

    Hi, bigtomrodney
    Still not connected to internet!
I have downloaded and installed the gnome network admin package and tried to configure the settings, but after I put them all in and click next, it says that I don't have permission to change settings. The instructions say to open SYSTEM > ADMINISTRATOR> NETWORK. Then press UNLOCK, (but I can't find where UNLOCK is) type password then select the CONNECTIONS tab etc.
I also found a thread elsewhere on the forums that says to type in to the Terminal "sudo pppoeconf", the Terminal window then says "sudo david password" but I am not able to type anything in where the cursor is, so I'm probably doing something wrong, any ideas?

That network tool should have already been installed, what version of Ubuntu are you using?
