Unable to boot using CD / USB after installing Ubuntu 9.04
Hi everybody,
I installed Ubuntu Remix Jaunty 9.04 netbook version on my laptop (Toshiba M50 satellite series). I had WinXP Pro installed on another partition earlier and Ubuntu was installed on a different partition. After the installation I decided to remove Ubuntu netbook version and install the desktop version using a CD. But now when I boot up my laptop and select to boot from CD / DVD specifically, I am unable to boot from the same and I land up on the grub menu.
I had installed Ubuntu using a USB drive and instructions from pendrivelinux.com.
Please let me know what to do so that I can uninstall the same and install a full fledged desktop version of Ubuntu Jaunty.

You cannot install using a USB. To install, you must have a CD. To download Ubuntu from the CD, restart your computer, then press ESC and select Boot from CDROM.

I'd go with coopstah13 and start checking your burn, it sounds more like a problem with your install media.
On the other hand, you should note that you can switch from the Netbook remix to a standard desktop by installing the ubuntu-desktop package. Then from your login screen choose a Gnome session instead. All of the Ubuntu variations use the same base with only the desktop oriented packages differing.

@hyperman299 - I tried doing what you suggested before I started this thread.
@coopstah13 - Thanks for that advice but I had burnt the image as an iso and I know the CD and USB were bootable as I tried it out on different machines.
@bigtomrodney - Thanks for the advice about ubuntu-desktop package. I was thinking of using the desktop version presuming it had more drivers for audio video as I was having some issues on my system. But if you say that only the candy eye changes then I am going to pass on.
But still I don't know why my CD drive and USB have become unbootable. I even tried inserting the WinXP CD and trying to boot from it and still it doesn't.

Have you checked that the bios has not disabled booting from usb or cd? I don't think that installing ubuntu would change that, but it sounds a lot like something modified the bios settings. It's certainly worth looking at just to be sure.

Hi,
Even i have the same problem. Even after double checking boot menu has CD/DVD has first boot, Win Vista DVD used provided by Dell while purchasing laptop. Even no sense of reading DVD in DVD R/W. I strongly feel something is affecting to boot from dvd? please think if boot option & DVD is perfect, possible issues to boot?
Regards
Ravi
