    Welcome to the forums!

I'd personally go with either 512MB, or 1GB. You should be fine with either, in my opinion.

By the way, you can get a 64bit version of Ubuntu should you prefer it.

Take a look down toward the bottom of this page under Custom Options for the option to go with 64bit:

I am just wondering is SWAP really necessary with 4GB of RAM? I personally have 2GB and don't have a swap partition.. I figured 2GB should be more than enough for the system.

If you don't intend using suspend to disk then swap is usually 2 x RAM upto a maximum of 1GB, you may not need any swap (depending on what you are using the system for) but 512MB or 1GB would be safe options ... you could monitor swap use and reclaim the disk space if you find you don't use swap at all.

No, it shouldn't be truly necessary unless the OP intends to run lots of memory intensive apps at once. I have 4 GB of RAM on my box but I do go ahead and make a SWAP partition anyway, because I have lots of hard drive space to spare, and just in case it should ever be needed down the road. As things are now, none of my current swap space ever gets used by the system.

One other note on SWAP necessity, I've heard that some distros actually require a swap file to be setup, or they won't install. If it's true, I'm not sure which distros that might be.

But even if he does use memory-intensive applications, that swap would never be used (neither would some of the RAM) since a 32 bit OS can only theoretically address 4GB of memory?

    Thanks for reply me.
I decide to go with 512MB since I don't use much RAM .
People in this forums are warm-hearted.I think I will learn a lot here.
