    Your network topology

Modem with NAT router > Wireless NAT router > Wireless laptop

Is this how it looks like?
If yes, is desktop connected to the modem?

i am not a networking guru, so all i can tell you is that there is a Motorola cable modem, hooked into a Belkin G+MIMO wireless router, which is hooked to the desktop and the lappy is connected wirelessly to it as well....if i wire in the laptop then i can transfer files no prob.,....but if the laptop is wireless then its a no go and says something like 'not able to identify shares'

Might be a firewall thing... if on you laptop the wired NIC is set as a trusted (or internal) interface and wireless set to external, then when hooked up via wireless the firewall with default to blocking all unexpected incoming traffic.

You can open the necessary ports in the firewall for which protocol you're using, set the wireless interface to trusted (or internal), or disable the firewall.

If you choose either of the latter two, remember to reset the firewall before going anywhere with your laptop.

I don't think Ubuntu comes with a gui tool to adjust the firewall from default, but they are available.
