    Pretty, Girly Ubuntu!

Oh guess what!!? I'm a brand newbie but I already changed a bunch of stuff and made my Ubuntu all cute and pretty (including the emo boy in my wallpaper, lol). And I only used the command line once to do it all (pats self on back)!

But I might have broken something too maybe...

Sometimes Ubuntu won't boot up (I have it log me in automatically) and I have to press the little black button. It always works the second time.

And movie player doesn't work when I try to open a movie clip from an e-mail (attachment). I don't know if I broke that or not since I never used it before I decorated my Ubuntu.

I installed LXDE because it makes my Ubuntu faster (a lot faster!) and prettier. If that makes a difference.

    Thanks!

    Love,
    Amy

You can use package manage to install VLC or open a terminal and type

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-esd mozilla-plugin-vlc
It should fix your movie player problems.

As for your booting problem I'm not sure what you mean by the little black button.

Oh! How wonderfully easy! I feel soooo powerful using the command line. Even the name makes me feel empowered: COMMAND line. I love it! And all that scrolling text and hard drive spinning, just from one simple little line of text. Awesome!

Now before I get all carried away with my sense of geeky empowerment, you wrote:

Oh, lol, I'm sorry! The power button. Hard reset I guess you call it. A circle with a vertical line through its top. Oh, silly me. All that empowerment from the CLI just makes me dizzy!

    Thank you,
    Amy

You may need to install the w32 codecs. You will need to add the medibuntu repository, and install them using apt.

Medibuntu :: Multimedia, Entertainment & Distractions In Ubuntu

Click on "Repository How To" for more information on adding it. You then can install the codecs with this command.
    Code:
     sudo apt-get install w32codecs
You also can then install the needed files to watch DVDs on your PC:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2

I already had the repository and codecs (thank you sweet Robin), but not the vlc-plugin. That must have been it.

But I wonder about the booting thing still. Maybe I shouldn't do the automatic log-in?

    Thank you again,
    Amy

Have you installed the correct video drivers? These can sometimes cause weird problems if not installed. Ubuntu may have already installed them for you, I don't know.
System > Administration > Hardware Drivers, check to see if you have Video drivers installed here.

It says, "No proprietary drivers are installed on this system." I don't think I need any though, everything seems okay with what I have except the bootup thing. How do I even know what drivers I should have (if any)?

Hope I'm not being a nuisance

There are several ways to see if you need them, but the easiest way would be to fire up your favorite tool, the CLI (Command line Inteface) and issue this command, post the results here.
    Code:
    lspci |grep VGA

    Okay, I got:
    Code:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
I have no idea what it means. But I've read that Intel doesn't play nice with Linux or something?
